SC disqualifies PTI leader Rai Hassan Nawaz for life

ISLAMABAD > The Supreme Court (SC) has disqualified for life Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf leader Rai Hassan Nawaz for concealing assets.

Hassan was facing a charge of concealing his assets in nomination papers and defaulting on loans.

In addition, the PTI leader had secured Sahiwal’s NA-162 constituency from a PTI ticket in the 2013 general elections but his victory was challenged by the runner-up and he got disqualified in 2015.

During the session, which was presided over by the Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed, the court noted that a five-member bench had already proclaimed Rai Hassan as not being honest and truthful as per the Constitution.

The NA-162 seat was later won by PML-N’s Tufail Jutt in the by-election in September 2016.

Rai Hasan Nawaz, who was elected into the National Assembly from NA-162 Sahiwal, was accused of taking loan of Rs220 million from a bank in 1992 but did not repay the money.

Justice Sheikh disqualified Rai Hassan under the Article 62(1)(f) which manifest that the disqualification is for life.

‘Specialized cook, and a space to walk: Nawaz Sharif enjoying ‘better class’ facilities at Jail

LAHORE > Defying reports of abysmal condition in the prison for PML-N supremo, the caretaker Punjab government says deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif is being provided with all facilities at the jail for which he is entitled to.

Caretaker Information Minister Ahmed Waqas Riaz informed journalists during a press briefing that the former premier was shifted to the jail on July 13 and was assigned ‘Better Class’ category of the prison the next day, July 14,” the minister said.

He made the justification in an apparent response to a letter written to the government by PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif three days ago seeking better facilities for his elder brother.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Prisons Malik Mubashir maintained that Nawaz was provided ‘Better Class’ facilities by the Punjab government on July 14 after the former prime minister submitted an application to this effect.

Being a ‘Better Class’ prisoner, Nawaz has been provided with the following facilities: the option to obtain his personal clothes, bed, mattress, shoes, table, chair, a 21-inch television, radio, toiletries, newspapers and other similar items at his own expense.

He has been jailed in a separate cell in a ‘Better Class’ portion of the jail. In his room, he has been issued a steel bed, table, chair, newspapers, sheets for his personal bed, personal clothes, one ceiling fan, two bracket fans and toiletries.

“He has also been allowed to keep a 21-inch TV. He has been provided adequate space to take a walk and he ‘regularly goes for a stroll in the lawn attached to his cell.”

It doesn’t just end, the minister says a specialised cook has been providing the diet recommended for him by an RIC nutritionist. The recommended diet that he is provided includes fruits, salad, dates and minced meat.

ISPR warns public over fake threat alerts circulating on social media

RAWALPINDI > Contrary to reports circulating on the social media, the military’s public affairs department, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), on Thursday clarified that it has not issued any threat alert for cities.

In a statement, the military’s media wing said that fake security alerts are making the rounds on the social media. It categorically denied having issued any such alert.

The messages circulating on social media claim some terrorists have entered some big cities of Pakistan for foul plays. The fake posts also ask the public to share the info with others, and the citizens are spreading it without any verification.

‘ISPR’s official website can be accessed to verify information [attributed to the armed forces],’ reads the press release.

The army’s media wing further adds, “This propaganda is a condemnable effort to spread fear [among citizens]. Citizens should keep an eye on fake calls, propaganda.’

Some time earlier, the army had warned the people against fake calls stating, “The impersonators try to seek personal details like CNIC, bank accounts etc on the pretext of census verification etc.

ISPR had said in the press statement, “There are reports of fake telephone calls being made to the general public by individuals impersonating as Pakistan Armed Forces officials.”

The military’s media wing shared its emergency helpline numbers, requesting the public to immediately report about such fake calls on the following numbers; UAN 1135 and 1125.

Turkey ends state of emergency imposed after failed 2016 coup

ISTANBUL > Turkey on Thursday lifted a state of emergency, two years after a failed 2016 coup attempt against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Turkish media announced the news what can be called a major development after Erdogan was reelected as president of the country earlier this year.

“To enact a state of emergency, the government must foresee serious indications of widespread violence which may interfere with the democratic environment or basic constitutional rights and freedoms of its citizens,” a media outlet reported.

A state of emergency, which restricts some personal freedoms and allows the government to bypass parliament with emergency decrees, was declared on July 20, 2016, after the deadly coup attempt that left at least 290 people dead and more than 1,400 injured in a chaotic night of violence.

Erdogan blamed the coup was orchestrated by his former ally, US-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, and has waged a sweeping crackdown on the preacher’s followers in Turkey.

The United Nations says some 160,000 people have been detained and nearly as many more, including teachers, judges and soldiers, sacked.

Ten new moons of Jupiter discovered, including one ‘oddball’

Astronomers on Tuesday announced the discovery of 10 more moons of Jupiter, bringing to 79 the number known to be circling the giant gas planet, including one “wrong-way driver” that appears destined to crash into other moons sharing its orbital highway.

All the newly identified moons are relatively small. While Jupiter, the fifth planet from the Sun, has large moons such as Ganymede – the biggest in the solar system with a diameter of 3,273 miles (5,268 km) – the new ones range in size from about six-tenths of a mile (1 km) to 2.5 miles (4 km). That is tiny compared to Jupiter’s diameter of 88,846 miles (142,984 km).

A research team led by astronomer Scott Sheppard of the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington has identified 12 small Jovian moons, including the 10 described on Tuesday. Sheppard said these moons were probably objects that formed near Jupiter during the early days of the solar system and were “captured” by the planet’s strong gravitational pull.

“Jupiter is like a big vacuum cleaner because it’s so massive,” Sheppard said. “These objects started orbiting Jupiter, instead of falling into it. So we think they’re intermediate between rocky asteroids and icy comets. So they’re probably half ice and half rock.”

The most interesting of the new moons is Valetudo (pronounced val-eh-TOO-doh), named after the ancient Roman god Jupiter’s great-granddaughter, the goddess of health and hygiene. Valetudo orbits Jupiter in the same direction that the planet spins, but a bunch of other small moons share the same orbital path while traveling in the opposite direction.

“Valetudo’s going down the highway the wrong way, so it’s very likely it will collide with these other objects. It probably has collided with them over time,” Sheppard said.

Jupiter’s 79 known moons are the most of any planet in the solar system, followed by the 62 identified around the giant ringed gas planet Saturn. Sheppard said Jupiter and Saturn may actually have a similar number of moons, with some of Saturn’s smaller ones not yet detected.

A moon is defined as any object, regardless of size, that orbits a planet, not the Sun. Only the two innermost planets in the solar system, Mercury and Venus, have none. Of Jupiter’s 79 moons, 26 remain unnamed, including nine of the 10 new ones.

Accountability court judge recuses himself from hearing references against Sharif family

ISLAMABAD > Justice Mohammad Bashir, the accountability court judge who sentenced former premier Nawaz Sharif and his family members in the Avenfield case, has recused himself from hearing the other two corruption references against the Sharif family, sources told ARY News on Monday.

According to sources, the judge has written a letter to Islamabad High Court (IHC) recusing himself from hearing Al-Azizia and Flagship references against Nawaz Sharif and his family.

The judge maintained that the repsondent’s (Nawaz Sharif) counsel has objected on the move so he cannot hear the other two references and the cases should be transferred to some other court.

The judge added that if required, he could also be transferred.

The judge, in his July 6 verdict in Avenfield case, handed former premier Nawaz Sharif 10 years as jail time for owning assets beyond income and 1 year for not cooperating with NAB in the Avenfield properties corruption reference filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

His daughter Maryam Nawaz was given 7 years for abetment, and her husband Captain (retd) Safdar was given 1 year for non-cooperation with the anti-graft authority.

Captain (retd) Safdar was arrested on Sunday, July 8 while Maryam Nawaz and Nawaz Sharif are due to return on July 13, Friday.

In the decision, Mary Nawaz and Captain Safdar had also been disqualified for any public office for 10 years.
