You can get killed for criticizing Indian govt, voices Saif Ali Khan on Sacred Games controversy

MUMBAI > This year, Bollywood superstar Saif Ali Khan and Nawazzuddin Siddiqui are coming up with first exclusive Indian Netflix show called ‘Sacred Games’.The show is said to be disturbing many Indian politicians, lawmakers and the cast of the show is facing a tough time.

The leading role is being done by Saif Ali Khan for Sacred Games and he is doing a role of a policeman named as Sartaj Singh. Recently, the Cocktail actor shared that “One could get killed for giving voice to their opinions”. The actor was reacting to the furor surrounding India’s first Netflix show, which was released on the streaming service on July 6 and has been criticised by Indian politicians and their party supporters.

Saif shared that“If you date someone from the wrong caste, somebody will kill you in some parts of India. That’s just the way it is,” Saif said in an interview to The Quint. The actor was in London and compared their relatively free society to the overbearing rules in India. “I don’t know how much you can criticise your government in India, somebody might kill you”.

While the prudes have been objecting to its violent and graphic content, politicians have taken offense to the portrayal of Rajiv Gandhi who – according to Ganesh Gaitonde, the enigmatic criminal portrayed brilliantly by Nawazuddin Siddiqui questioned publically that “If the PM is so corrupt then why to expect honesty from us?”

Saif Ali Khan – who plays Sartaj Singh, a struggling policeman further said that “It will be deeply frustrating if something happens to the show. If someone says you can’t air this or if Netflix is discontinued. Then that will be my turn to be outraged”.

According to Hindustan Times, “a member of the Congress party has filed a petition against the show for its depiction of former PM Rajiv Gandhi. His son and current Congress president Rahul Gandhi in a tweet Saturday said that his ‘father lived and died in the service of India. The views of a character on a fictional web series can never change that.’ Gandhi’s statement was lauded by the show’s creative team, including co-director Anurag Kashyap.”

Let’s see if this first Indian Netflix show will be able to survive the opposition and criticism by politicians and for how long the actors will face threats on doing such controversial projects.
